Our Get Set Progress interns had an inspiring Skill Share session delivered by Christopher Patnoe, Head of Accessibility and Disability Inclusion, EMEA, at Google. Christopher shared Google’s commitment to inclusive innovation and accessible technology, highlighting his journey from opera singing to becoming a tech leader at Google.

Our interns learned about Google’s mission to make information universally accessible, citing the European Accessibility Act as a catalyst for expanding global accessibility efforts. Key initiatives include Google Maps’ accessibility features, AI-driven tools like Guided Frame and Pixel Magnifier, and the integration of large language models to enhance screen reader functionality. Christopher also addressed the challenges of web accessibility, noting that 95.9% of home pages had detected Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) errors. He concluded by inviting questions and feedback, underscoring the importance of community collaboration and continuous improvement in accessibility.

Will, one of our Get Set Progress interns shared his thoughts: “Many thanks, Christopher, amazing seminar with some inspirational technology to look into. I’m also on the Project Management course and thoroughly enjoying it.”

“I just wanted to echo everything others have said, thank you so much for such an insightful presentation.” Added Samiya, a fellow Get Set Progress Intern. “The work you do, integrating AI in tech to make it accessible, is so, so inspiring and beneficial to everyone. Also, I’m currently completing the Project Management certificate of the accredited learning and really enjoying it, so thank you for helping us access that!”
