Video first for sight loss simulation

Date posted: 6th January 2021

For the first time ever the sight loss sector can show how the world looks through the eyes of people with vision impairment, thanks to a new video from Thomas Pocklington Trust.

The video, produced with assistance from RNIB and Glaucoma UK, focuses on the six most common sight conditions in the UK today: Cataracts, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Hemianopia, Age-related Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma.

TPT’s Chief Executive Charles Colquhoun said: “This is the first time a video of this kind has been produced. As an organisation, TPT aims to increase awareness and understanding of the needs and aspirations of blind and partially sighted people. Visual impairment varies greatly from person to person and is sometimes difficult to demonstrate what people with the various conditions experience – until now.

He added, “We hope this video will help other businesses and sight loss organisations in their work – whether for staff and volunteer VI awareness training, to educate architects and town planners or engage corporates in campaigns. We are very proud to be leading on this work”.

The 16 minute video shows each of the six conditions, with increasing severity overlaid with a simulation onto moving footage of everyday activity. Each simulation has a narration describing the condition in terms of cause, demographics, impact and any available treatment.

It is available to watch as one continuous video or by selecting a condition or conditions that is most relevant. What do we see? How the world looks to blind and partially sighted people is available on the TPT YouTube channel:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxqXEt5tuQs
