Skill SharePeople who are blind and partially sighted continue to experience barriers and obstacles when it comes to the workplace. Our corporate partners are helping us redress that.
There are over two million people in the UK living with sight loss and it is estimated that this figure will double by 2050. 27% of registered BPS people are in employment compared to 81% in the general population (RNIB). Unemployment rates for BPS people haven’t changed significantly in a generation (RNIB). Employment rates for BPS people compare less favourably with employment rates for other groups with impairments – 25% vs 50% (UK Government). There are approximately 84,500 registered BPS people of working age in the UK (RNIB).
In recent research, blind and partially sighted people rated employment as the second biggest barrier they face in living their lives.
